Self-Esteem - 10 Ways to Help Your Child Increase It

  • Teach your child to replace their negative mental messages. For example:

Negative talk

Positive Talk

I’m stupid

I am smart

No one likes me

I am a likeable person

I’m ugly

I like the way I look

  • Try not to diminish your child’s feelings. For example try not saying things like Don’t be silly or It’s not that bad or Boys don’t cry.
  • Notice the positive actions of your child and be sure to comment on them (I’m proud of you, keep up the good work, you’re so smart).
  • Leave work at work and focus on family when at home.
  • Tell your child you Love them at least once a day.
  • Assure your child that it’s ok to make mistakes.
  • Play hooky one day and spend the entire day together. Go to a Children’s Museum, a theme park, or the zoo.
  • Create a family scrapbook together.
  • Take time off work to volunteer in your child’s classroom or for a school trip.
  • Don’t say, I told you so.
